Welcome to McElmo Canyon Research Institute!

MCRI is a small nonprofit foundation dedicated to the preservation of archaeological sites in southwestern Colorado and to educating the public about them. Beginning in the mid-1960s under the name of Kelly Place , MCRI has helped hundreds of students of all ages realize the importance of archaeological preservation. The Kelly Place and MCRI host public, private and special education school groups and colleges, archaeological field schools, present professional seminars and provide educational programs for the Elderhostel Road Scholars. In 1990, McElmo Canyon Research Institute was granted 501-c3 status as a nonprofit educational corporation. Therefore, not only can MCRI host Road Scholar groups, but these McElmo Canyon Research Institute, Cortez, CO groups can work with government agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management to perform volunteer services for the Anasazi Heritage Center in Dolores, Colorado, and the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

Frequent partnering with local archaeologists and the Bureau of Land Management has resulted in the stabilization of Sand Canyon sites in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, survey of hundreds of acres of public lands, rock art recording, artifact curation and preservation, and provided hundreds of hours of volunteer assistance for these projects.

As a small organization, MCRI offers grant administration for needed archaeological projects at a low cost, so more of the grant funds can go directly to accomplishing the work for which it was intended.
